Menopause Q&A

What is Menopause?

Menopause is the stage of a woman's life when she is leaving her fertile years behind. A woman in menopause has a far lower chance of becoming pregnant, and menstrual cycles will stop. Menopausal women produce much less hormones than they did in their fertile years.

When Does Menopause Officially Start?

Menopause officially starts when a woman hasn't menstruated for 12 months consecutively. If any other factors contributed to missed periods, a woman is in perimenopause (the transition phase) rather than menopause. Perimenopause typically lasts for around 4 years before a woman is in full blown menopause. Most women start menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age being 51 at the official onset of menopause.

What Are the Symptoms of Menopause?

Each person can have a different set of symptoms, but most women do experience significant symptoms during menopause. During perimenopause, the periods will become sporadic. As a woman enters menopause, she may experience hot flashes, lack of libido, insomnia, mood swings, and night sweats.

What is the Best Way to Manage Menopause Symptoms?

Menopause symptoms can be greatly reduced with the help of hormone replacement. The natural hormones decline sharply as a woman enters menopause, and this has a direct impact on many parts of her health and well-being. The hormones can be replaced orally, with patches, with injections, or with hormone pellets that are inserted in the skin. Each woman may have different hormone replacement needs during her hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Faraz-Eslami will customize a hormone replacement regimen for each woman. Some women suffer from depression during menopause, and in these cases, antidepressant medication may be helpful. Women can also make lifestyle adjustments that will help them better manage menopause symptoms. This includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, and a consistent schedule.
